Vol. IX, No. 3 | Winter 2015
Hyperion is concerned with aesthetics, with the value of art and the ways in which it can be transformed and renewed. We are looking for applied criticism — philosophical essays that are evaluative of specific artists and specific works of art. Although broad aesthetic theorization should enter into the assessment of the artist and works under examination, we are not interested in purely abstract speculations. In addition, we are not looking for strictly art-historical or merely descriptive essays. What is of interest
to us is a proposing of the worth, either intrinsic or conditional, of the art under consideration and the principles that underlie the estimation of value. Further, we are also concerned with the way in which discoveries in the sciences alter our understanding of and perception of reality and thereby the making of art, forcing us to consider whether the art of our time is congruent with such discoveries, or anachronistic.
